South African Communist Party (SACP) Secretary General Solly Mapaila wants the impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa to be fast-tracked, saying delays could lead to a situation where “we will have no government infrastructure as everything would have been sold.”
His comments come after a Constitutional Court ruling that found Parliament acted unconstitutionally in blocking an earlier attempt in 2022 to set up an impeachment inquiry committee against the President.
Delivering the judgment on a case jointly brought by EFF and African ATM, Chief Justice Mandisa Maya also ruled that Parliament should form an impeachment committee to determine whether Ramaphosa was still fit to hold office.
Speaking during the party’s Chris Hani provincial commemoration in Bushbuckridge on Sunday, Mapaila accused the Government of National Unity (GNU) of wanting to sell Eskom.
"The GNU government wants to sell Eskom. They want to put Eskom in the market, and they think we don't know that. They are collaborating with the IMF. That will never happen as long as we are alive in South Africa," he said.
He added the Communist Party's delight in the Constitutional Court ruling on the matter.
“We welcome this Constitutional Court judgment. This impeachment must move fast because if it is delayed, we will have no government infrastructure, as everything would have been sold.”
“They are people who have even been told to run Operation Vulindlela, business people. They are right inside the Presidency; they are sharing the resources of this country. It's a new form of state capture, and they are now even selling water to the people".
IOL previously reported that Mapaila said the party will not descend into “abuse” of the ANC, requiring members with dual membership to choose sides ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
The remarks come as the ANC prepares to send letters to members holding dual membership after a National Executive Committee (NEC) decision to enforce constitutional provisions barring members from joining or supporting another political party.
The ANC has reportedly told members who also belong to the SACP to say, within 10 days from Thursday, which party they will support in the 2026 local government elections.
