AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has opened up on the reasoning behind the club’s decision to sign Zimbabwean midfielder Mason Mushore, describing the move as both a necessary response to recent challenges and part of a wider plan to strengthen the squad.

The Durban-based club confirmed Mushore’s arrival from Highlanders FC on a permanent deal on Wednesday evening, adding depth to a midfield department that has been tested heavily this season. Usuthu are currently fifth in the Betway Premiership standings and are eager to cement their place in the top eight for next season’s MTN8, while also keeping an eye on a possible CAF qualification spot.

Zwane admitted the signing was accelerated by a difficult period where AmaZulu were left thin in key positions due to injuries and unavailability. “The reality of football is we needed to beef up our team because we were a little bit challenged at some point when we lost Bongani (Zungu), (Siyanda) Hlangabeza, and Ben (Motshwari) at the same time, and Bern wasn’t available,” he said.

Those absences, particularly in central midfield, exposed a lack of balance and options, forcing the technical team to reassess their depth as the demands of the season intensified. “We saw the need to bring in another defensive midfielder with the quality to bring the ball forward, and we’ve been hunting those types of players for quite some time now.

Mushore fits that profile, offering both defensive discipline and the ability to progress play from deep areas — a quality Zwane believes AmaZulu have been missing at times. “In Mason, we have got a player who has those qualities and we’re just hoping that he’ll adapt sooner rather than later because we need a player of his calibre; the games will be coming thick and fast and it will be hectic with suspensions and injuries expected.

With the Betway Premiership schedule set to become increasingly congested, squad depth and reliability are expected to be decisive in the second half of the campaign. Zwane believes Mushore’s arrival will help AmaZulu cope better with those demands, but he made it clear that the club’s recruitment drive is not yet complete.

“Having Mason will definitely add value to the squad, but we’re still looking because that’s not the only position we wanted to beef up. We still want one or two more in certain positions. We just don’t want to sign for the sake of signing; we have to make sure that we bring in players who will hit the ground running, either a striker or another left wing-back just to balance the team.

The emphasis, Zwane stressed, remains on quality rather than quantity as AmaZulu look to maintain consistency and competitiveness across competitions. The KwaZulu-Natal-based club will return to action on 25 January following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations, with Zwane hoping to have his squad settled and strengthened as the season enters its decisive phase.
