The eThekwini Municipality has announced that there have been delays in completing critical maintenance work on the Southern Aqueduct.
The water supply restoration is now expected to begin on April 1.
"There have been delays in completing the Southern Aqueduct shutdown, which was scheduled for completion this morning," the municipality said.
Officials indicated that work is now expected to be finalised later on Tuesday evening, pushing back the timeline for restoring water to affected areas.
The delay has left extensive parts of the central and southern regions without water, affecting multiple reservoirs, systems and communities.
In the central region, affected areas include Farningham Ridge, Hillary, Malvern, Mount Vernon, Queensburgh, Queensmead Industrial, Shallcross, Moseley Park, Nirvana Hills, Northdene, Coedmore, Memorial Park, uMbilo, uMhlathuzana, uMkhumbane, Arena Park, and Bulbul.
Additionally, Chatsworth Town Centre, Crossmoor, eHhlanzeni, eZinyathini, Klaarwater, KwaMgaga, Montford, Moorton, Phumphele, Risecliff, Silverglen, Welbedacht East and West, Westcliff, Woodhurst, Buffels Bosch, Burlington Heights, Savannah Park, St Wendolins Ridge, Bayview, Croftdene, Havenside, Kharwastan and Yellowwood Park.
In the south region, outages extend across uMlazi sections A, B, C, D, E, F, S, T, V, M, L, J, K, H, R, Q, P, BB, CC, AA, G, W, N, as well as X (Malukazi), Y and Z. Additional affected areas include Ensimbini, Ntabankulu, Draaihoek, Mahlabathini, Mangamazini, Mkhazini, Folweni A, B and C, Golokodo, Dodoza and Isiphingo Esincane.
Within the Pinetown South system, impacted areas include Klaarwater, Phumphele, St Wendolins, parts of Nsizwakazi, Savannah Park (Phases 1 and 2), Wiltshire industrial area, Regency Park, Latana, Hlanganisa, Gwala Road, Sarjoo Road, Demat, Progress Road, Mawelewele, Intake Road, Luganda, parts of Nagina, Khoseleni, Sthundu Hills, Dambuza, parts of Bell Tower and Grasmere Roads, and Mpongo Road.

The municipality emphasised the long-term importance of the project.
"Work on the Southern Aqueduct remains critical, as the project will significantly strengthen water security, reduce system losses, and improve long-term supply reliability for communities in the southern and central regions."
Residents and businesses have been urged to report water-related issues through official municipal platforms, including the city's mobile app, WhatsApp line and toll-free call centre.
