Sello Mosikwa, 49, has been convicted and sentenced to two life terms by the Molopo Regional Court for raping two women in separate incidents in April 2024.

The first attack occurred on April 28, 2024, in Mmabatho, when Mosikwa encountered a 21-year-old woman walking home from a tavern with a friend.

He voluntarily accompanied them near his residence, then became aggressive, dragged the victim to his house, and raped her.

The friend managed to escape.

A second incident later that month involved a 40-year-old woman at Mega City Complex, whom Mosikwa lured to a nearby house under false pretences and then raped her.

"The NPA welcomes the conviction and sentencing of Mosikwa to two life terms for his heinous crimes," said spokesperson Sivenathi Gunya.

Mosikwa pleaded not guilty during his trial, but the court heard that his actions were premeditated and targeted vulnerable women.

Advocate Kefentse Diseko emphasised the consistency of witness testimony and the accused's lack of remorse, urging the court to impose the minimum life sentence.

Regional Court Magistrate Stephan Du Toit highlighted the deliberate targeting of victims and the need to protect vulnerable individuals.

"The NPA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of victims of sexual offences," Gunya added.

Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, praised the State's legal team for securing justice and noted the importance of deterring gender-based violence.

Mosikwa was denied bail after his arrest and remained in custody until the conclusion of the trial.

"This outcome sends a clear message that such crimes will attract the severest penalties."
