THE Independent Media Group is proud to announce the triumphant return of two iconic titles—the Sunday Independent and Pretoria News—as standalone publications.
This bold move comes in direct response to the overwhelming demand from our loyal readers, who have made it clear: these titles are not just newspapers; they are institutions.
The Sunday Independent makes its grand return to Gauteng this Sunday, 9 March, while the Pretoria News reclaimed its independent status on Friday. This is more than a relaunch—it’s a statement of intent. At a time when others are retreating from print, Independent Media is doubling down on our commitment to quality journalism and the enduring power of the printed word.
This strategic decision cements Independent Media’s position as South Africa’s leading print media house, offering an unmatched portfolio of daily, weekly, and weekend publications. While competitors have shut down their print divisions, we have remained resolute, even through the toughest economic challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
During those testing times, we ensured these historic titles lived on. The Sunday Independent continued to reach readers through the Sunday Tribune in KwaZulu-Natal, while the Pretoria News found a home within The Star in Gauteng. Now, they return to their rightful place as standalone titles, ready to deliver the exceptional journalism our readers deserve.
The Sunday Independent will once again set the standard for in-depth analysis, hard-hitting investigative reporting, and a dynamic mix of lifestyle, business, technology, and sports coverage. Meanwhile, the Pretoria News will shine a spotlight on the issues that matter most to the capital city—from embassy affairs and local sports to exclusive stories about top achievers and community-driven narratives.
I am thrilled to congratulate Sunday Independent editor Sizwe Dlamini and Pretoria News editor Mazwi Xaba as they lead these titles into an exciting new chapter. Their expertise, passion, and dedication will ensure these publications continue to deliver excellence and integrity to our readers.
I would also like to extend my deepest gratitude to our chairman, Dr Iqbal Survé, for his unwavering belief in the power of print media. While others have abandoned the medium, his visionary leadership has kept Independent Media at the forefront of South Africa’s publishing industry.
This is a moment to celebrate. The relaunch of the Sunday Independent and Pretoria News is not just a win for Independent Media—it’s a win for journalism, for readers, and for the future of print.
Welcome back to the Sunday Independent and Pretoria News. The story continues, and it’s never been more compelling.
