The Kraaifontein police precinct has recorded a 33% increase in murders, according to the latest SAPS crime statistics released on Friday.
The increase was recorded from the beginning of October until the end of December last year, compared to the same period in 2023. The reported murder cases increased by 16 cases from 49 to 65.
This precinct was third in the province and fourth in the country for murder.
Although rape fell 26% from 65 cases in 2023 to 48 last year, Kraaifontein was the fourth in the province and among the top 20 in the country for this crime.
Kraaifontein took the top spot in the province and was in the top 20 in the country for burglary at homes even though the cases dropped 23% from 180 in 2023 to 139 for the same period last year.
Parow was plagued by common robbery with 74 cases reported in the last three months of 2024 - the same number for the previous reporting period - and it was the sixth in the province and 16th in the country.
Theft out of or from motor vehicles dropped 13% in Bellville, from 195 to 170 cases. The precinct was fourth in the province and twelfth in the country.

“The Western Cape continues to record the highest number of gang-related murders, with 263 counts reported in this quarter alone. This is completely unacceptable, and it must change. A large number of these murders (collectively amounting to a figure of 135) occurred in Bishop Lavis, Mitchell’s Plain, Kleinvlei, Delft and Elsies River,” he said.
