The City lifeguards and Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club's lifeguard Jonah Lustig were commended for saving a man from the waters of Camps Bay on October 5.
According to a club statement, Mr Lustig was not on duty and had just finished surfing when he learned of the incident.
“Off-duty Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club lifeguard Jonah Lustig had just finished surfing when he heard cries for help from two beachgoers. Their friend was caught in a strong rip current and struggling to stay afloat,” the statement said.
“Jonah immediately grabbed his surfboard and rushed into the water. He was joined by beachgoer Sam Frankal and a City of Cape Town lifeguard. Together, they managed to get the man onto Jonah’s surfboard and safely brought him back to shore.
“Once on the beach, Jonah placed the man in the recovery position and checked his vital signs while City lifeguards provided oxygen and called for an ambulance. Thanks to their swift response, the man has fully recovered.”
Paul Lassen, Clifton Surf Patrol officer said the ocean can be unpredictable and dangerous for those unfamiliar with its movements.
“Rip currents are a frequent hazard along our coastline, forming channels where water flows back out to sea. These can often be identified by darker water and fewer breaking waves. If caught in a rip, it’s critical to remember the #Float-to-Live technique.”
Here are the safety tips:
Stay calm and conserve energy;
Lie on your back to float;
Signal for help by waving or shouting; and
Swim parallel to the shore to escape the current if you’re able.
