DURBAN - A 30-YEAR-OLD alleged armed robber died after he was shot by a homeowner in Waterloo, Verulam, moments after he allegedly robbed a teenager yesterday.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the incident took place at 8:45pm on Tuesday night.
Mbele said an 18-year-old man and his friends were walking along Jackal Road in the Waterloo area when they were accosted by an unknown armed suspect who demanded they hand over their cellphones.
“The 30-year-old suspect robbed the victim and fled the scene into someone else’s yard and he pointed his firearm at the property owner.
“The owner retaliated and shot the suspect after warning him to put the gun down,” said Mbele.
She said the suspect was fatally shot in the abdomen and leg.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said Rusa members were called out to the residence at about 9pm.
He said on arrival Rusa officers located a man lying in the yard bleeding extensively from a gunshot wound to his pelvic region.
It is alleged the armed suspect was shot after he attempted to gain entry into the house, said Balram.
Police said a case of robbery and an inquest were opened at Verulam SAPS for investigation.
