The phrase, "Just a kasi girl with big dreams", is very familiar to many of us and was frequently heard while growing up.

For Lesego Maako, this phrase carried so much meaning because her dreams turned into reality and today, she is a living testimony that indeed you can be a kasi girl with big dreams because no dream is too big.

Hailing from Mamelodi, one of Pretoria’s vibrant townships, Maako knew that her calling was to be in law and be involved in the justice system after she got her inspiration from watching the popular “Sarafina” movie.

“The film 'Sarafina' has had a profound impact on my life, leaving an indelible mark on my perception of justice and inspiring my career aspirations.

“As I matured, my understanding of justice evolved. I became increasingly aware of the crime and abuse perpetrated by individuals within my own community, and my focus shifted to advocating for victims who cannot defend themselves.

“To me, law is not merely a profession, but an innate passion driven by a sense of purpose,” she told “Independent Media Lifestyle” in an interview.

She also revealed that another reason she pursued a career in the legal profession was due to the high crime rate in her hometown.

“My inspiration to become the kind of attorney I am today stems not from my family, but from my neighbourhood.

“Growing up in a loving and equitable family environment, I was fortunate to be shielded from injustices that often drive individuals to pursue a career in law. Instead, it was the harsh realities of my community that shaped my aspirations,” she said.

Maako went viral back in December after she shared on social media that she was sworn in as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa, leaving many inspired by her story and determination to follow her dreams.

When asked how she felt on the day she was sworn in, she excitedly shared that it felt like it was her wedding day!

“I am now part of the judiciary family, having been duly sworn in as an attorney of the High Court on December 4, 2025.

“The experience was exhilarating, akin to a momentous celebration - it felt like a wedding day,” Maako said.

She specialises in the following areas: deceased estate, family law, criminal law, personal injury claims and contract law.

When asked what she hopes that young girls and boys take from her story, she highlighted that it would be that discipline and perseverance are key.

“I want girls and boys to see themselves in me, see that someone who failed grade 10 and a few years later ended up as a lawyer - it's not just a story in an English book, it's a reality.

“I want young girls and boys to give themselves a chance, over and over again, like I did. I want them to understand that making it in life starts within your mind, and discipline is something you need every day.

“You can't put it on the shelf and hope to pick it up later. I want them to have hope, be patient and never give up,” she said.

Just like any other academic journey, the 26-year-old faced hurdles along the way, which she ended up conquering because of her grit to make her dreams come true.

“Law school has been a transformative journey that has not only honed my academic skills but also shaped my character. Through the challenges and triumphs, I have discovered that I am strong, confident and a fighter.

“I have learned that I possess an unwavering determination to see things through and that I will not rest until justice is served and the case is closed. This newfound self-awareness has instilled in me the resilience and perseverance needed to navigate the demands of a legal career,” she added.

In terms of her future aspirations, Maako shared that she wants to be a “boss babe” and build a legacy for herself.

“My vision for the future is to be my own boss, creating job opportunities for aspiring candidates and eventually becoming a principal or a leading figure in my field.

“I'd love to teach others how to apply the law, share my experiences and make a real impact in my community. It's about building a legacy and giving back,” she excitedly said.

Looking beyond graduation, she also opened up about how she hopes her journey will be remembered as an attorney

“My journey in five words: 'Do it for your obituary'." That phrase drives me - thinking about the story I want to tell, the impact I want to have and the memories I want to leave behind.

“It's about living life with purpose and making every moment count,” she said.

Maako also shared a message of encouragement to new graduates who are about to embark on their careers.

“This is my message to graduates who are stepping into practice. My advice is not to rush into articles. Take your time to find the right fit.”

She added that finding the right workplace that allows you to learn and grow will be beneficial for you and your career.

“Find yourself a workplace where you can grow, learn, and thrive. You'll be spending 45+ hours a week there, so it's gotta be worth it. Don't settle for anything less than an environment that supports you and helps you become the best version of yourself,” she said.
