“Play your story,” said China, reflecting on the philosophy behind Audio Biography as the platform prepares to mark its second anniversary and tenth edition.

The milestone celebration will take place on Saturday, April 25, at Truth Night Club in Midrand, bringing together a community of house music listeners who have followed the journey since its launch.

At the centre of the event is China (China Salemane), the curator, resident DJ and driving force behind the platform.

With a career spanning more than two decades, China has built a reputation rooted in deep house and musical storytelling.

From his early days playing vinyl in the late 1990s to the release of the “House Kollektives” compilation series and the development of his Deep Inside brand, his influence has reached dance floors across South Africa and international audiences.

Looking back on his career, China said that the years behind the decks shaped how he now approaches Audio Biography.

“It has definitely shaped my approach in creating musical experiences. Most importantly, it influences how people interact with dance music in general, especially in an era where people see music rather than hear it. We have to get back to appreciating the art in its truest form.”

That philosophy is central to the concept of Audio Biography. The platform was created as a space where DJs can tell their story through the music they play rather than simply performing short sets focused on popular tracks.

For China, the idea is rooted in respect for the craft of DJing and the culture that surrounds house music.

“My inspiration for Audio Biography is a simple one,” he explained.

“As the tagline says, ‘Play Your Story.’. It means telling your story through the music you play as a DJ. This pays homage to DJs who remain true to the art form and to house music enthusiasts who understand that journey.”

He said that the platform also exists to give opportunities to artists who often struggle to find space on larger stages.

“It is a platform that is carefully curated for underdogs where they can unleash their talents. These are the individuals who rarely have the opportunity to share their story on notable stages. We shine the light on undiscovered gems, and two-hour sets are mandatory so a DJ can take the audience on a real musical journey.”

For China, stepping behind the decks at an Audio Biography event is less about performance and more about connection.

Each set is shaped by the mood of the crowd and the intention to create a shared experience on the dance floor.

“What I play on that day is always fueled by wanting to create a memorable night,” he said.

“Each session is different, and I always do my best to deliver memories that will stay with people for a long time. It becomes a musical conversation and connection like no other.”

As the platform reaches its tenth edition, the anniversary represents more than a celebration for the team behind it. China sees it as a reflection of the audience that has supported the platform.

“For me, celebrating two years is a testament that we are doing our bit to take the house music culture forward,” he said.

“People want good, quality fun and entertainment. The environment is a safe space where they can let loose on the dance floor.”

He also hopes the event will introduce new listeners to the community that has grown around the series.

“For those who have not experienced Audio Biography, it is definitely one not to miss if you love house music. In our house, everyone is invited because the spirit of the house lives within each and every one of us.”

Since its launch, the platform has positioned itself as more than a nightlife series. Built around the pillars of story, sound and experience, the brand has hosted nine curated events and built a following drawn to its format and atmosphere.

In keeping with its approach, the line-up for the anniversary event will only be revealed on the day. The decision reflects the trust between the organisers and their audience.

Rather than relying on headline announcements, the event has grown through word of mouth and the reputation of its curator.

Over the years, China has shared stages with international figures such as Louie Vega and Jojo Flores while performing alongside South African artists including Black Coffee and Culoe De Song.

His career has taken him from clubs in Johannesburg to global gatherings such as the Miami Winter Music Conference.

As the anniversary approaches, China noted that the goal remains the same as it was at the beginning.

“At the end of the day, it is about the music, the people, and the story we create together on the dance floor.”
