Multi-platinum-selling artist Vusi Nova was a hot topic last week, after the behind-the-scenes content from his funeral-themed music video circulated online. “I wanted to confront something people are often afraid to talk about: death,” he explained.

Now at 40, and having journeyed through both triumphs and deeply personal challenges, Vusi Nova used the concept to confront mortality with grace and honesty.

“Instead of fearing death, I wanted this moment to remind us to truly live, to love deeply, and to appreciate every breath while we still have it,” said the musician.

“For me, it was about breaking that fear and reminding people that it’s something we will all face. Instead of running from it, I wanted to create something that makes us reflect on life.”

Multi-platinum artist Vusi Nova's new music video confronts the taboo of death. Bringing this powerful concept to life was made possible with the support of Icebolethu Funerals and was shot at the Fourways Memorial.

The music video’s theme got many people weighing in on social media and Vusi Nova understands why some people might be uncomfortable, but his intention was never to disrespect anything.

“I wanted to start a conversation about life, legacy and how we want to be remembered.”

He admits that witnessing his own “funeral” was very emotional and surreal.

“It felt like I was watching my life from the outside, seeing the people who matter to me all in one place. It really made me think about what truly matters.”

From “When I’m Gone”, Vusi Nova wants people to appreciate life more.

“Love people while they’re still here, live fully, and don’t wait for tomorrow to do what matters today.”
