Thandiwe Baloyi, law student at the University of Johannesburg, human rights activist and published author, introduces her new book, “Jah Love”.

The novel explores the intersections of love, belief and the law through the journey of Rachel, a young woman from Mamelodi.

Rachel grew up in a township where survival comes before dreaming. When she moves to a new city to continue her studies, she encounters Kofi, a Rastafarian law student guided by faith.

Their meeting sets the stage for a story where personal beliefs, cultural differences and legal realities collide.

At the University of the Western Cape, Rachel faces the challenges of independence and the harsh truths of a justice system that often fails those who need it most.

Kofi’s calm, spiritual discipline and devotion to Rastafarian principles challenge Rachel’s understanding of life and love.

Their friendship develops into a romantic bond rooted in mutual respect, Pan-African pride and a search for peace.

Despite their connection, Rachel and Kofi confront obstacles that test their relationship. Family expectations, societal prejudice and legal dilemmas place pressure on their love.

As they navigate these challenges, their relationship becomes a space where cultural and legal tensions meet personal commitment.

Rachel is forced to ask whether love guided by faith can endure a world determined to pull it apart.

The novel draws heavily from Baloyi’s experiences growing up in Mamelodi, exploring how personal history and societal systems influence individual choices.

Themes of resilience, justice and faith are central, illustrating how love interacts with law and belief in complex, often unpredictable ways.

“After months of writing, editing, and dreaming, my book is ready to meet the world. ‘Jah Love’ is inspired by my experiences growing up in Mamelodi, and tells a story of what happens when love, belief, and the law collide - and whether faith is strong enough to hold it all together," said Baloyi.

"I am so grateful to my editor, Sukoluhle Nontokozo Mdlongwa, for bringing out the best in this story."
