A DA councillor in the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality has found himself at the centre of a police investigation after a case of sexual assault was opened against him.
CAPE TOWN - A DA councillor in the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality has found himself at the centre of a police investigation after a case of sexual assault was opened against him.
The victim alleged councillor Dawid Jooste had tried to touch her when he gave her a lift on February 26.
“He gave me a lift from town to Vyeboom farm. Then he tried to touch me when I pushed his hand away. He said that he didn't mean it like that.
"Then after I reached home I told my mom, we immediately posted it to Facebook to ask who he is. After getting the right information I went to the station to open a case of sexual assault. I am angry because I never gave him permission to touch me,” she said.
Jooste declined to comment on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed an investigation was pursued.
“A case was transferred to Caledon FCS for further investigation.
“The investigation into the matter continues,” he said.
ANC leader of the opposition, Cameron Dugmore said they were outraged by the allegations.
“Councillors are elected to represent communities and defend and advance the interests of the people.
“What this DA councillor is alleged to have done is a betrayal of trust and an extreme example of gender-based violence.
“We urge SAPS to conduct a speedy investigation so that this matter can be brought to court without any delay.
“We salute the victim for having the courage to come forward and urge the police to provide her with all the support she needs.
“I call directly on Premier (Alan) Winde, acting DA provincial leader Tertius Simmers and national DA leader John Steenhuisen to immediately suspend this councillor while the investigation is under way.
“Anything less would expose the DA for paying lip service against gender-based violence within their party, in government and society.
“They also need to launch an internal investigation into this councillor,” said Dugmore.
Theewaterskloof Local Municipality DA political head Isaac Sileku said they viewed the allegations in a serious light.
“Public representatives should set a high standard of conduct at all times and the allegations made are viewed in a serious light.
“We are aware that a case has been opened with the SAPS and will give full support in the investigation,” Sileku Said.
The allegations come in light of the resignations of Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz who is accused of sexual misconduct.
Patriotic Alliance deputy provincial leader Sammy Claassen said: “We are calling on the Speaker of the Theewaterskloof municipality to act swiftly in this matter.
“We call on the Speaker and council to provide the victim with counselling services and help in order to help her cope with her horrific experiences and current situation,” said Claassen.
