Thousands of revellers kicked off their festive season in style on Sunday, packing the Grand Parade long before sunset as excitement built for the annual Festive Lights Switch-On.
The mood was electric. Families, friends and visitors poured in from every direction, turning the space around City Hall into one big summer street party. Kids owned the car-free streets of Adderley and Darling, darting between stalls and dancing to the music, while parents lounged on picnic blankets, soaking up the warm evening atmosphere. Law enforcement officers were visible throughout the event, keeping things running smoothly and ensuring the vibe stayed safe and family-friendly.
By the time the lights finally blazed to life, the city was already glowing. The 56th edition of the Festive Lights Switch-On celebration took place this year under the theme "United in Hope". The show kicked off at 4pm, but families had already gathered since early in the morning to ensure they got a perfect spot in front of the stage.
By Sunday night no major crime or health emergency was reported, according to queries made to the police.
Headlining the show was DJ Zinhle along with Kurt Darren, DJ Masoodah, Goodluck, D6 Hanover Minstrels, Early B and Justin Vega and many more. Boeta Gamat and Boeta Joe from the iconic Joe Barber comedies kept the crowd entertained.
Enjoying the vibe was Edwina Isaacs, all the way from Lavender Hill, who said that she and her family are from all over the Cape including Plumstead, Southfield and Seawinds.
"It is a family tradition. We come every year," she said. "We have been coming consecutively for 16 years. We make sure that we come early every year so that we can watch the show. We enjoy every bit of the liggies (lights)."
Originally from Kimberley, but now staying in Gugulethu, Diann Komie was loving the festive vibes.
She said: "We love the lights festival. I enjoy myself so much every year, although it is so hot and I am baking in the sun, I don't mind because I know the sun will set soon then we can party. It is festive."
Singing and dancing along to the tunes, all the way from Goodwood are Gavin and Shaquille: "We enjoy everything, the music, the lights, the vibe is just awesome. We were here early from 12pm to get the best front seats."
