Cape Town - With plans under way for another spectacular Kaapse klopse season, there is palpable excitement in Cape Town, particularly within the ranks of the Baruch Entertainers, one of the city’s treasured minstrels troupes.

This enthusiasm is set to culminate in a lively Summer Party event on November 30, at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre. At the gathering, the troupe will proudly unveil their new uniform, designed for the upcoming 2025 Cape Town Street Parade and Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) competitions.

In a time of economic hardship, Baruch Entertainers is determined to ensure no one is excluded from celebrating their cultural heritage.

Chairperson, Claude Jonas, said: “Our uniforms are not merely costumes; they are symbols of unity, pride, and tradition. We aim to make these outfits accessible to everyone, especially those who might struggle financially. The economy has made it more challenging to produce these outfits, but we are committed to ensuring all our members can celebrate together.”

Tickets for the event are priced at R100, with proceeds directly contributing to the cost of the troupe’s signature satin and sequined uniforms.

“Every little bit goes a long way in bringing joy and pride to children who want to celebrate our culture,” Jonas said.

A highlight of the Summer Party will be the debut of Baruch Entertainers’s new theme song – a powerful anthem crafted by renowned Cape Flats musical talents, including Taurik Blignaut and Choral Maestro Monwabisi Mbambani, alongside DJs and musicians.

“Our troupe offers a haven amidst societal hardships, giving young people a way to connect with their heritage,” Jonas said.

Director of the KKKA, Muneeb Gambeno, said plans are afoot to prepare for the new klopse season.

“Plans are all being finalised for the season but essentially we are gearing-up for the Voorsmaakie at the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, December 14.

“The troupes have been intensifying their preparation and appear to be excited to showcase their offering.

“Teams are practising most evenings and that is split between their big brass band, their sing pak (choir) and their small band for the best band segment of the competition.

“We also have the return of Baruch Entertainers aiming to dethrone the current champions, West London All Stars and Juvie Boys, and excitingly, TV Stars who have signed-up a super band to make a run for the top honours during what is their 21st anniversary year.”

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said logistics will be provided in the lead-up to the respective events. “The City currently has a multi-year agreement in place, supporting the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association and the Cape Malay Choir Board, who are responsible for organising the respective events,” Smith said.
