Ocean View police are investigating an attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said according to their reports, the victim was walking down the road at around 6:30pm when gunshots were fired and she was injured.

“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident in Carina Way, Ocean View (on Monday) at about 6:30pm, where a 12-year-old female was shot and wounded are under investigation,” he said.

Twigg said the victim was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Chairperson of the Community Police Forum (CPF) in Ocean View Mansoer Ishmail said he was angry about the ongoing gang-related shootings that affected innocent people and children.

“We looked into the CCTV footage and saw that it was a shooting between gangsters. A gang member was shot as well. The girl is doing well in hospital,” he said.

Ishmail said just last week another gang-related shooting happened near Ocean View School School but added no learner was harmed as school was still in session.

In a post on social media, the school’s acting principal Andrew Sanders said the shooting occurred shortly after 10am in the parking lot of the school.

“The shooting situation in Ocean View has seriously become out of control. By the grace of God no person or learner on the premises were harmed. May I assure parents/guardians that our school remains a safe haven and a gun and drug free area,” read the post.
