Cape Town - A free bicycle taxi service took off in Hermanus this week to transport tourists in and around the popular tourist town.

The service will be conducted as a pilot project for three months, and if successful, will be implemented on a permanent basis.

“The purpose of this service is not only to impress visitors with the abundance of attractions and hospitality of the town without them getting lost, but also to drop them off on the doorsteps of the many shops and other businesses in the CBD of Hermanus,” said Suné Greeff, tourism manager of the Overstrand Municipality.

The bicycle service also aims to create jobs and skills training for the unemployed youth in the community.

The first six taxi cyclists received their training last week. It involved customer care training and an educational tour to familiarise them with the attractions of Hermanus.

The training was provided by the municipality’s tourism department and the Overstrand Traffic Department.

The cost of the service is covered by businesses. - Cape Argus
