Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, in Cape Town is setting a new standard for slow luxury hospitality.
Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, the iconic hotel known affectionately as The Nellie announced the launch of its two vibrant dining destinations this summer: The Fountain by Planet Bar and Saturday Braai.
According to the hotel, these two dining offerings invite guests to embark on a culinary journey that showcases the rich flavours of South Africa and beyond.
Introducing The Fountain by Planet Bar
The Fountain by Planet Bar reimagines the leisurely dining experience against a breathtaking backdrop of lush gardens and sprawling trees.
The restaurant is perfect for those sunny afternoons where lunch effortlessly merges into dinner, enhanced by Mediterranean-inspired cuisine that champions local, seasonal ingredients with a relaxed flair.
Guests can also flit between spontaneous drop-ins or planned gatherings, finding joy in every moment shared.
“The menu reflects a thoughtful curation of dishes such as Zuney Wagyu bone marrow, fresh Cape burrata, house-made charcuterie, and artisanal cheeses from nearby suppliers like wild peacock.
“Other offerings include Nonna-style pork and beef meatballs with fresh bread, West Coast prawn scampi, Saldanha Bay mussels, roasted calamari or eggplant, and a medley of flatbreads prepared just steps from your table,” said the hotel.
A tribute to South African heritage: Saturday Braai
The hotel also revealed that every Saturday, from noon to 3pm, the hotel hosts Saturday Braai - a heartfelt homage to South Africa’s treasured outdoor culinary tradition.
Guests gather poolside, enveloped in the delectable aroma of wood-fired cooking, with a menu that reflects South African culinary diversity.
Iconic dishes like the boerewors roll, local beef cuts, and grilled shellfish assure a feast for both locals and international guests.
Traditional sides like samp and beans and mealie pap compliment the smoky delights, while classic desserts such as koeksisters and malva pudding bring forth a wave of nostalgia.
To enhance the festive vibe, visitors can enjoy cold craft beer or carefully selected local wines, all against the soothing backdrop of live acoustic performances, transforming each Saturday into a culinary celebration of heritage.
By embracing South Africa's rich ingredients and culinary techniques while remaining rooted in its history, Mount Nelson is embarking on a new chapter of excellence.
The fusion of contemporary flair with authentic culinary experiences places the iconic hotel on the world stage.
