The World Travel Awards has announced its Indian Ocean Island 2024 winners, casting a spotlight on the region's most exceptional destinations. As bestsellers in the South African market – whether for a romantic holiday or one with the family - let's explore which tropical island might be your perfect match.

Maldives: A honeymooner's dream

The Maldives emerged as the big winner, clinching multiple titles, including 'Indian Ocean's Leading Destination', 'Leading Green Destination', 'Leading Honeymoon Destination', and 'Leading Dive Destination.'

“With its overwater bungalows and pristine beaches, the Maldives is perfect for couples seeking luxury and privacy,” says Antoinette Turner, General Manager of Flight Centre South Africa. “It's the ultimate escape for those wanting to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other.”

Seychelles: Nature's paradise

The Seychelles scooped the prestigious titles of 'Indian Ocean's Leading Beach Destination' and 'Leading Nature Destination.'

Nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers will find this heaven. The Seychelles offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with its forests, unique wildlife and stunning beaches. It's a haven for hikers, bird watchers and conservation enthusiasts.

Mauritius: The allrounder

Mauritius took home the title of 'Indian Ocean's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination,' underlining its appeal to thrill-seekers.

However, Mauritius is more than just an adventure playground. “It's an incredibly versatile destination, suitable for families, couples and solo travellers alike,” notes Turner. With its perfect beaches, diversity of resorts, water sports and golf courses, Mauritius caters to a wide range of interests.

Embracing slow travel

Interestingly, these island destinations align with a growing interest in slow travel.

"Slow travel is gaining popularity worldwide but, in fact, for South Africans, slow travel has always been popular – at least when it comes to beach and island holidays,” says Turner. “Rather than trying to cram multiple destinations into one trip, slow travel sees travellers opting to spend more time in one place, really immersing themselves in the local culture and experiences. The Indian Ocean Islands have long been a favourite spot to kick back and relax, usually staying in only one resort or area.”But in recent years, we’ve seen South Africans look beyond the beach to other experiences that can be enjoyed on these islands, such as cultural and food tours, adventurous activities and outdoor pursuits such as hiking and even running and mountain biking.”

Planning your island escape

"Think about what you want from your holiday,” says Turner. “Are you looking for adventure, relaxation, cultural experiences or a mix of everything? Each island has its own unique charm and offerings."

She also recommends booking well in advance, especially over the peak periods. With direct flights available to many of these destinations, your slice of an Indian Ocean paradise is more accessible than you might think.
