PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma says it will be out of order for him to take action against Mac Maharaj.

This comes after reports alleging the president’s spokesman received millions of rands in secret payments from a French arms firm while he was transport minister, as the matter is being dealt with at a legal level.

The Institute for Democracy in Africa said it intended complaining to the public protector about Maharaj’s possible abuse of state resources in issuing statements on the matter through the Presidency.

The DA said it would file a complaint with the public protector relating to the allegations.

At a business breakfast hosted by the New Age yesterday, Zuma said: “Mr Maharaj is handling that matter at a legal level, so I don’t think I’m qualified to comment.”

Maharaj is due to speak to the National Press Club today.
