Durban - The family of the Durban-based founder of Black Women in Science, Ndoni Mcunu, who passed away on Saturday has asked for privacy as they mourn the death of their beloved daughter.
According to Mcunu’s environmental scientists non-profit organisation, she passed away last Saturday while on vacation with friends in Krugersdorp.
The police notified the family of the death citing a gas leak at the accommodation venue as the probable cause of death.
In a statement, the organisation said the 33-year-old was on vacation at the Cradle of Humankind with friends.
“Krugersdorp police who noticed the family ... cited a gas leak at the accommodation venue as the probable cause of death, pending the outcome of a post-mortem and the conclusion of police investigation,” the statement said.
The family has since asked for privacy as they mourn the passing of Mcunu.
On Wednesday, the Cradle of Humankind also shared Mcunu’s death on their Facebook page, labelling her as one of the “fierce” and “brilliant light” human beings.
“A remarkable climate scientist who ensured African voices were heard in our fight for a better future, a social activist and advocate for representation of black women in science globally. She will be deeply missed,” the post said.
Messages of condolences poured from research organisations and individuals who praised Mcunu for her role in science in social media.

Mcunu’s memorial service is set to take place on Friday in Sandton, Gauteng, while the funeral will be held in La Lucia, in Durban, April 30.
