Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has praised star midfielder  Lucas Ribeiro following their 3-0 win over cross-town rivals SuperSport United on Wednesday evening.

The Brazillian midfielder has been impressive for the Tshwane giants this season and is currently the Betway Premiership's top goal scorer with seven goals.

He also provided nine assists in all competitions and was again one of the standout players for Masandawana on Wednesday, and is already being tipped by fans on social media as a potential player of the season.

Speaking after the match, the Portuguese tactician praised Ribeiro's outstanding performance and expressed his hope that Madndawana can retain his services for years to come.

Last year, IOL reported that the star midfielder had reportedly drawn interest from EFL Championship club Burnley.

“One of the things I said to Lucas [Ribeiro] when I arrived here, knowing that he was in good form in the league, was to try to tell him that there are always things that can be done,” said Cardoso according to FarPost.

“Try to make him understand that ambition he should have to try and develop himself should be present every day in his life.

“We work hard on the mindset of the players, a lot. We work hard on that. And I think the message is [for all] of them. With commitment, hard work, a strong mindset on getting better, respect and waking up every day thinking that this is the day to do my best.

“Lucas can go. We need to profit as much as possible while we can from him, and let’s hope the club can keep him for long because he’s a very important player.”

Sundowns are currently top of the log table with 39 points from 14 matches and will face second-placed Orlando Pirates on Saturday and will be hoping to secure a win and solidify their lead.
