Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has sounded an ominous warning to their competition in the Betway Premiership, following their 3-0 dismantlement of SuperSport United on Wednesday evening.
A goal from Jayden Adams and a brace from Tashreeq Matthews inside the first hour saw Sundowns romp to a comfortable victory, and keep Orlando Pirates at arm’s length in the title chase.
Pirates too, collected a win on the night with their 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United away.
It means Sundowns maintained their six-point cushion at the top of the log, ahead of their meeting with Pirates on Saturday.
Cardoso though, hinted that there was still room for improvement from the champions.
'The team has to grow'
“We have steps to go forward. Today there were lots of young players and players that have just arrived at the club. The team has to grow, but that does not mean we’re not in a good place,” said Cardoso after the match.
Despite the comprehensive scoreline, the match was anything but easy argued the coach.
“The result in the end may give us the idea that the match was simple, but the match was not simple. It was important to produce the goals in the moments we created.
“We had a good start to the game with that goal which allowed us to get that confidence.”
A last minute change to their approach was prompted by the team SuperSport put out, Cardoso revealed.
“After we saw the lineups, we saw SuperSport changed their tactical structure. That made us change our gameplan before the match even started.
“During the first half there were also two structural changes [made by SuperSport] which made us change again.
“Coaches have the players, and the players give the answers on the pitch. We played the game very comfortably and finished it off due to what the players did.”
