Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona have reportedly been making inquiries about Orlando Pirates starlet Relebohile Mofokeng.
The 20-year-old Mofokeng had an impressive breakthrough season that saw him score the winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final and earn his first international cap for Bafana Bafana. And earlier this year, he was likened to Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal by TS Galaxy owner Tim Sika.
And now, the Spanish giants have seemingly taken notice of his talents and have started to ask questions, according to a source quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“There have been enquiries from Barcelona on Relebohile Mofokeng. The boy has been monitored by the coaches of the Barcelona B team with interest,” the source was quoted by the football publication.
“They have been following him and made approaches with some of their contacts in the PSL, including certain coaches they know closely, asking about the player.
“He is a player with potential to play in some of the top leagues in Europe and the feedback has been positive on the enquiries made.”
In July, Sukazi was so impressed with the impact Mofokeng had on Pirates’ season that he felt the then teenager could do the same things as Yamal, who played a key role in Spain’s European Championships triumph having just turned 17.
“You can rave about Lamine Yamal, but Mofokeng at Pirates does the exact same thing, or even better, in my humble opinion. Our league is much faster than what you see in La Liga,” Sukazi said at the time.
“They are slow, they have time on the ball, they are technical and they are very much aware but we are very fast and our game is high-paced,” Sukazi said.
“To navigate at his age and decide matches the way he does, he is in the exact, if not better level than Yamal of Barcelona. If you don’t believe me, put them on the field together, you will see what I am talking about. We have that kind of talent but it must be trained by the qualified people.”
