Stellenbosch FC defender Fawaaz Basadien has opened up about the persistent rumours linking him with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Since joining the Cape Winelands side from Moroka Swallows, Basadien has become a central figure in their pursuit for honours.

Last week, he netted the winning goal — via the penalty spot — in their MTN8 semi-final first leg win over the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns, and was once again a key figure when they won the return leg in Durban on the weekend.

Basadien’s form for Stellenbosch has also convinced Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos to hand him an international call up.

Addressing the Kaizer Chiefs rumours at the Bafana camp reiterated his commitment to Stellenbosch, where he signed a new long-term contract earlier this year.

”I control what I can control,” Basadien said when speaking about the reports of Kaizer Chiefs’ interest in his services, as quoted by iDiskiTimes.

”Obviously I’m contracted to Stellenbosch, that’s where I’m playing. All I can do is put in good performances week in, week out. I’m there to do a job – never mind what’s going on in the media.

”Obviously it’s good to have a club like Chiefs interested in you, but I’m contracted to Stellenbosch and my focus has been there by Stellenbosch and just to put in good performances week in, week out.”

On his first international call-up, the 27-year-old left back said: “Obviously it’s an honour and privilege to represent my country.

”As a footballer you always want to represent your country and fortunately for me I’ve put in some good and consistent performances and the coach selected me.

”And all I’ve got to do now is take my chance and make the most of it.”
