Melbourne - The ex-trainer of former Australian heavyweight champion Vince Cervi has been jailed for more than eight years for killing the former boxer during a scuffle in 2009.

The Victorian Supreme Court was told Tuesday that David Allan Curran fired a fatal shot into Cervi's stomach as the pair wrestled over a gun following a dispute about furniture.

Curran was originally found guilty of murder but gained a retrial last year, with a second jury finding him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Cervi beat James Grima to win the 1993 Australian title but lost in his first defence to Joe Bugner, who had an international profile after losing twice to the great Muhammad Ali.
