KwaZulu-Natal is mourning the loss of Nkandla councillor, Mbhekiseni "Bhejane" Biyela.
Biyela died in the early hours of Monday morning.
"We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Cllr Biyela. We extend our condolences to the Biyela family, the residents of the Nkandla and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
"The loss of Councillor Biyela is a significant blow to the community, as he was a patriot who prioritised the improvement of their lives," said Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.
He said Biyela's commitment to public service was marked by diligence, humility, and dedication to the betterment of rural communities. The sphere of local government is poorer without his leadership and vision, which greatly contributed to the welfare of residents.
Buthelezi commended Biyela's bravery, decisiveness and dedication.
"His contributions to community development and public service will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him," Buthelezi said.
African National Congress (ANC) provincial spokesperson, Mafika Mndebele, also expressed condolences to the Biyela family.
