Police in Gauteng have fatally wounded six suspects, involved in an armed robbery in Germiston on Saturday morning.
Police further recovered an AK47, four handguns and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said police teams received information about a robbery in progress in Germiston in the East Rand region of Gauteng.
"A multidisciplinary team, comprising of officers from the South African Police Services (SAPS), Directorate for Priority Crime (the Hawks) as well as the SAPS Airwing and other law enforcement, were deployed to the area.
“As members approached the area, a lookout was received for an armed robbery at the Top Bets where a G4S vehicle. Suspects were travelling in a Hyundai ix35," Masondo said.
He said officers proceeded to search for the vehicle and when they attempted to stop it, the occupants fired at police.
Masondo said police fired back and the driver of the Hyundai lost control and crashed into a pole.
"Six suspects were fatally wounded while a seventh was seriously wounded. The vehicle that the suspects were using had been identified as stolen in Brooklyn, in Pretoria," Masondo said.
Investigations continue.
