Those wanting their new-generation Ford Mustang with some Shelby Super Snake poison can now order the muscle car they've been waiting for.
The 2024 Shelby Super Snake, based on the seventh-generation Mustang GT, is now available to order in South Africa at a price of R3,640,000.
While that may be R2.3 million more than the donor car commands, the Super Snake is almost twice as powerful, and comes with a raft of tantalising upgrades via Shelby South Africa.
For starters the Mustang’s 5.0-litre Coyote V8 motor is given a high performance supercharger, which pushes the maximum power output to ‘619kW+’, says Shelby. The normally aspirated Mustang GT, for the record, produces 328kW in its standard form.
To help it cope with the extra ponies, the Super Snake is fitted with a Shelby Extreme Cooling System, which includes an upgraded radiator and heat exchanger.
And as if the standard Mustang’s V8 soundtrack isn’t stimulating enough, Shelby has thrown in a Borla exhaust system with unrestricted airflow, promising a highly “aggressive” engine note.
A Shelby custom suspension system is part of the deal too, as are upgraded brakes and 20-inch forged magnesium wheels with Shelby performance tyres.
It won’t be mistaken for a regular GT on the road, thanks to a unique grille and bumper, carbon fibre Wide Body front fenders and an aluminium vented bonnet with ‘hood pins’. At the back we see a carbon fibre Super Snake rear wing and carbon lower diffuser, components which improve downforce and improve high speed stability.
Cabin upgrades come in the form of embroidered floor mats and sports seats, Super Snake door sill plates, Cobra puddle lamps and a serialised dashboard plaque, signifying the unique build.
“With the Super Snake's competition heritage, we knew it was critical to create a car that is enjoyable for daily commutes yet highly rewarding during spirited driving. While the styling inside and out is undeniably striking, every decision was made with functionality in mind. This car checks all the boxes,” said Vince La Violette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations.
An initial batch of three conversion kits has been allocated to South Africa, and as mentioned the finished Super Snake costs R3,640,000, including the price of the base vehicle. However, that price is subject to change based on exchange rate fluctuations, Shelby SA warns.
