Chevrolet's first small SUV, the all-new Trax, will debut at the Paris motor show.

The five-seater Trax really is small - 4248mm long and 1776mm wide on a 2555mm wheelbase - but it's a proper SUV, with versatile seating and storage, and on-demand all-wheel drive.

The engine line-up for Europe includes a 103 kW/200Nm, 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol four, a 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 96kW/300Nm, 1.7-litre turbodiesel. A six-speed manual gearbox with idle stop is standard across the range.

The 1.4 turbo and 1.7 diesel - but not the base 1.6 - will also be available with a six-speed auto transmission and/or all-wheel drive.

With eight possible seating/luggage combinations, the cabin is all about versatility. The rear seat splits 60:40, and the front passenger seat folds flat for carrying long packages. The boot holds 385 litres, in addition to storage bins above and on both sides of the centre stack, as well as an optional drawer under the front passenger seat and more stowage under the floor of the boot.

Standard safety equipment across the range includes six airbags, antilock braking with electronic brake distribution, and electronic stability control with hill hold and traction control. LT variants will also come with trailer stability assist and hill descent control.

GMSA says the Trax is 'under consideration for its South African portfolio' but that no decision has yet been made.
