It had to happen: petrolheads love to pore over exploded drawings of their favourite engines, debating the merits of the Taglioni desmodromic valve system or the elegant simplicity of a three-litre Cosworth-Ford DFV.

Now here's the first techno-porn picture we've seen of an electric motor - to wit, the prime mover for GM's 2013 Chevrolet Spark battery car.

Although the Spark is a Korean GMDat product, the motors will be made at a GM plant in Maryland on the US East Coast.

GM executive director of vehicle electrification engineering Larry Nitz says the production version will be good for 85kW, which won't move the earth but it's close to double the power of the Spark's ancestor, the Beat EV concept, which had to make do with 45kW.

Nitz admits this is uncharted territory for GM, but says: "Electric motor development and manufacturing is another area of expertise we'll need as we expand vehicle electrification technologies to address the needs of our customers around the world."

Yeah, right, dude.
