Sana’a - Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh, currently hospitalised in Saudi Arabia, is in “good health and spirits”, his adviser Abdel Karim al-Iriani said on Monday.
“The president is in good health and spirits,” said Iriani upon his return from Riyadh without giving further details.
The veteran Yemeni leader was admitted to a Saudi hospital for treatment to wounds sustained in a June 4 bomb attack as he prayed at a mosque in his palace compound in Sana’a.
Iriani said he had discussed “several national issues” with Saleh who gave him the “necessary directives on the subject”, although he did not elaborate.
The prolonged absence of the president has raised questions about his true condition both in official circles and in the ranks of the opposition which is clamouring for a quick power transfer.
Saleh, at the helm of Yemen for almost 33 years, is facing a mass protest movement that is now calling for the creation of an interim council to fill the political void created when he was flown to Riyadh earlier this month. - Sapa-AFP
