Haiti's President Michel Martelly has picked attorney and legal scholar Bernard Gousse to be the country's next prime minister, a government source told AFP on Wednesday.
“It's official, the letter naming Mr. Gousse will be delivered today to the leaders of the Haitian parliament,” said Thierry-Mayard Paul, Martelly's chief of staff.
Gousse, 52, is Martelly's second pick for the post, after the Haitian parliament last month rejected the nomination of his first choice, Daniel-Gerard Rouzier.
Lawmakers had expressed concerns that Rouzier, a businessman and political novice, could face conflicts of interest at the helm of government.
Forty-two deputies in quake-hit Haiti had voted against Rouzier's nomination some two weeks ago, most of them members of former president Rene Preval's Unity Party, sending Martelly scrambling for a new nominee. -
