Durban - Two teens who are believed to be former pupils of a Phoenix school approached a motorist outside the school on Wednesday, armed with a knife and hijacked the driver.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said one of the teenagers was arrested while his 16-year-old accomplice fled the scene in the stolen silver VW Polo.
Balram said Rusa received a call for assistance at approximately 2pm.
He said it was reported that both teenagers, who were former pupils of the school, approached the driver with a knife and demanded he exit the vehicle.
“The incident drew public attention. One suspect was immediately apprehended by the community while his accomplice sped off in the victim’s vehicle,” said Balram.
Balram said Rusa members contacted Tracker and activated the vehicle’s tracking unit.
He said the stolen vehicle was emitting signals a few kilometres away in the Amaoti area.
Rusa officers together with members of the SAPS K9 Unit and the Tracker operations team proceeded to Amaoti where the vehicle was found abandoned and recovered.
“According to the suspect in custody, they intended on joining a gang in Amaoti, KZN. Part of the initiation process was to hijack a vehicle. They were expected to deliver the VW Polo to a taxi owner,” said Balram
Balram said the teenager is currently detained at the Phoenix SAPS.
Police have been approached for comment.
