Durban - The South African National Defence Force(SANDF) confiscated contraband worth R223 million hidden under maize in a truck travelling from Mozambique into South Africa through the Lebombo Port of Entry (PoE) in Mpumalanga last week.
The SANDF said on October 17, members of the SANDF deployed under Operation Corona intercepted a cargo truck that was carrying maize.
“Upon searching the truck SANDF members discovered that underneath the maize there were 1 07 boxes containing Sildenafil Citrate tablets 'Cobra-120',” said the SANDF.
Cobra-120 is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The SANDF said the driver of the truck was arrested and the truck was confiscated and handed over to the SAPS.
“The contraband is valued at approximately R223 million,” it said.
The chief of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Siphiwe Lucky Sangweni and the General Officer Commanding Joint Operational Headquarters, Major General S G Hlongwa commended the officers on the seizure.
“The South African National Defence Force will keep fighting cross-border crimes that has a negative impact on the economy of South Africa.”
