It’s the wedding season and while the maid of honour has a lot of work to do to make sure the wedding runs smoothly, the best man must also do his part diligently.

Being the best man for the first time can be a challenge because you don’t know how to navigate things.

That is why wedding expert Chris Badja, the owner and founder of Groomsday, tells the best man and the groomsmen not to panic. Instead, they should work as a collective to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

“Being a best man comes with both honour and responsibility. While it can be overwhelming for some, having a clear plan and staying organised makes sure the big day goes off without a hitch.

“From managing groomsmen to delivering that all-important speech, preparation is key. The goal is to create a smooth experience for the couple while making lasting memories.

“A well-prepared best man can elevate the wedding day, but going the extra mile will put you down in best man folklore,” says Badja.

Below are tips on how you can be the greatest best man:

Planning the bachelor party

Communicate with the groom and his friends about the kind of party they would like. Overindulging in alcohol is not cool as you’re not in college anymore.

Maybe a weekend away doing fun activities would do. Also, avoid hosting the bachelor party a night before the wedding. The groom needs to rest and look just as great as his bride.

Manage the groomsmen

You must have planned everything with the groomsmen before the wedding. Everyone must know what their role is and, if there is a performance you would like to deliver, make sure everyone has rehearsed or it’s going to be a flop.

Choosing the right attire

Everyone needs to stick to the theme. Do not try to be cool by wearing something out of theme, it’s disrespectful to the couple getting married.

Deliver a memorable speech

Prepare a speech in time and make sure it’s about the couple. Do not speak about embarrassing moments, such may make the couple feel uncomfortable.

“It’s important to remember that the speech is not about you, but about the couple in front of you. Keeping the speech specific to the couple makes it feel more authentic and special while avoiding any awkward moments or putting people to sleep,” says Badja.
