London - Furniture giant Ikea is recalling thousands of Batman-style capes, saying they are a “strangulation risk” to children.
Parents are being warned that three children have already been hurt while wearing the item.
The black capes hang around the neck of children but the Swedish flatpack specialists are asking parents to return the LATTJO accessory to shops where they can get a full refund.
A statement from Ikea said: “Ikea is recalling LATTJO bat capes after reports about three children that have received marks and scratches on the neck while using LATTJO bat capes. The cape got stuck and didn’t detach easily enough from the children’s necks. No injuries which required medical treatment have been reported but due to the risk of strangulation or injuries to the neck, Ikea is taking precautionary measures and recalling the product.”
Mother Heidi Roberts, 32, from Cardiff, said: “This is very worrying, you’d think a store as big as Ikea would carry out the proper checks before putting these things on sale. My four-year-old is Batman obsessed and this is the exact sort of thing he would have picked up and begged me to buy if we were in there.”
