Cape Town - Using past papers to study came in handy for the Cape Times matric panel who wrote the business studies and electrical technology examinations on Thursday.

A total of 25 668 pupils wrote business studies and 418 wrote electrical technology.

The other subjects that were written on Thursday were nautical science and dance.

Derrick Ouysi, from Camps Bay High School, Nicole Lancefield, from Herschel Girls’ High School, and Byron Milton, from Kuils River Technical High School, all used previous papers as study material and felt it had helped them tremendously when it came to writing the exam.

Ouysi said many of the questions asked in his business studies paper were similar to those posed last year.

“It’s good that they did not dramatically change the structure of the paper so matrics are not taken by a big surprise. We can prepare accordingly,” Ouysi said.

Lancefield, who plans to continue with business studies, majoring in financial accounting at UCT next year, said the exam paper was “not walk in the park”, but she was well prepared.

Milton said aside from using past papers, he found drawing mind maps and writing essays helped him prepare for his electrical technology paper.

“Electrical technology went really well. There were some tricky questions, but it was a good paper overall,” Milton said.

Education MEC Debbie Schäfer’s spokesperson Jessica Shelver said the exams went off without a hitch.
