It is interesting to note that singing sensation KB's pantomime debut coincides with new motherhood. She will play KB, the Cool Kitten in Janice Honeyman's crazicomic pantomime, Aladdin which opened at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre at the weekend and runs till December 31.
Having spoken to her at another theatre production before she gave birth, KB said her appearance in this panto depended on when her baby was born. And it seems he already knows the art of perfect timing because he is now almost a month old.
"It is beautiful being a new mom. I'm also excited about my first time in a panto. Pantos relate to kiddies because they are so animated and most of my fans are kids," she said.
Two years ago KB won the Kids Choice Award for Best Female Artist.
Last year she won the Star In You award, also for Best female Artist.
"The kids are the ones who vote in these awards. I have always wanted to do something for children on their level and not on mine. Being part of this panto is giving me the chance to do just that," KB said.
This may be KB's first time in a panto, but it is definitely not her first time on stage.
The talented performer studied Musical Theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and she has been in productions such as The Wizard of OZ.
She was also part of the first cast of African Footprint from the end of 1999 till 2001.
"When you do music, you get used to being the boss. Well at least that is the case with me. The other reason I'm doing this panto is because I wanted to get back to basics and have somebody else tell me what to do for a change."
KB also has some television experience and e.tv viewers may remember her playing herself in the soap Backstage. Her most recent TV appearance was in the detective series Mthunzini.com. The next season of the series starts shooting next year.
She took a year's break from her music since her last album, El Musica, but she collaborated with her husband on his album, Uncle Terry: The DJ.
Oh yes, and she is flaunting a new surname. She is now known as KB Pinana, no longer KB Motsilenayane.
She is also the face of Revlon's Charlie cosmetic range.
This perfectionist is known to be a hard worker.
"Whatever comes my way that I can do, I will do," she said.
After the birth of her baby, KB went home for a week. After a week the workaholic in her told her mother that she was returning to work. So there's no doubt that she will turn KB the Cool Kitten into something special.
