Entertainment par excellence. This is Sun City's latest production Let There Be Rock! now on at The Sun City Theatre. Revving it up through the ages of rock this production leaves no room for Sun City tradition - no lavish feathers, let alone the rest of the equation.

This change, which "purist" extrav fans come completely unprepared for, is the dawning of something new - not impulsively out of place, but thoughtfully strategised. It is indicative of a number of factors merging into a meaningful theatrical evolution.

The reality check into the unattainably exuberant budgets for extravaganzas that do not draw audiences is one such sobering factor.

A need for family fare at entertainment resorts is another. And, of course, the brimming pool of talented South African performers waiting to hit the spotlight, a convincing other.

So, what do you get? A skillfully staged production with superb performers in a state of the art theatre.

The power of the show lies in the strength of the music. Alessandro Batazzi's tight arrangements and the line-up of top musicians is a mind blow. Batazzi's guitar solo as such is a work of art. He literally has the audience gasping.

The four young vocalists are electrifying. Byron-Lee Olitavo who has shaped into a formidable and unique stage persona within a relatively short career places himself in the epicentre of every moment on stage.

Alongside him the two rocker ladies Candida Mosoma and Sharon Spiegel firmly stand their ground. David Chevers is in a league of his own.

His performance is penetratingly focussed (even in the wildest of moments). His vocal command and precision allows for textures and colours to emulate nuances that are chillingly brilliant.

Contributing to the success of the show is the slick (not corny) selection of songs that brings about many "aah!" moments in the audience.

Also evident is the wizardry of experienced theatre director Ivor Jones. Where Bryan Mynhardt's choreography is too thinly spread, a strong ensemble of trained dancers come to the rescue with zesty performances.

If leaving the theatre on a high is the measure for successful theatre then Let There Be Rock! is the new benchmark.
