The KZN Youth Orchestra (KZNYO), a group of talented young musicians, are gearing up to entertain audiences at the Durban Street Food Festival at the Pavilion Shopping Centre this weekend.
Known for their diverse collection, encompassing a wide range of musical genres, from classical to rock and pop, KZNYO is a group of 60 people with members, ranging in age from 10 to 20. This musical group was established over 20 years ago to provide a platform for talented young musicians to come together and create beautiful music.
Leading to the Durban Street Food Festival, IOL spoke to the assistant conductor and organiser of the KZNYO, Cathy Peacock to get more insight about the group.
“Music conveys emotions, it evokes memories and it just makes people feel good,” she said.
Talking about their participation in the Durban Street Food Festival, Peacock explained that they were approached by the organisers who were seeking young musicians and diverse entertainment.
“He saw the KZNYO at a concert and was very excited to invite them to come and perform at the street food festival. We are excited to play there as it takes orchestral music to the people. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to play more fun, up-tempo music to create a festival atmosphere,” said Peacock.
This versatility and the orchestra's vibrant and energetic performances sets them apart from other musical groups.
With enthusiastic anticipation, Peacock discussed the unique opportunity to take orchestral music to the people at the Durban Street Food Festival.
She also shared that the orchestra is passionate about engaging with the public through their performances.
“They thrive on audience response, so I think the public will find their enthusiasm and group dynamic infectious and fun,” she added.
By showcasing a mixture of music, including South African pieces, the KZNYO aims to contribute to the celebration of Durban's diverse culinary heritage and culture.
Peacock also expressed the feeling of renewal and energy that the spring season brings.
“It fills us with a feeling of renewal and energy. The air is fresh and the flowers are abundant!” Peacock said.
The young musicians are also excited about other upcoming performances, including their Gala concert at the Jewish Centre on Sunday, October 13.
The Durban Street Food Festival will be hosted at the Pavilion Shopping Centre from September 6 to 8. Audiences can look forward to live music performances, food and beverages.
