'Christopher Robin' sees Winnie-the-Pooh’s(Jim Cummings) childhood companion, Christopher Robin(Ewan McGregor), all grown up and has lost the joy in life he once had.
Rating 4/5
Pooh and his other members of the Hundred Acre Wood having to bring it back into his life.
Nostalgia reboots have been drilling every popular franchise to cash in on the hugely successful nostalgia wave currently in media. And while 'Christopher Robin' does employ a lot of call-backs to the original Winnie-the-Pooh series. It does it in such an earnest away that you can’t help feeling all the childhood fuzziness all over again.
This movie, furthermore, does a stellar job of appealing to both adults and kids with it being due to the supporting members of the Hundred Acre Wood. It’s really interesting to see them now as an adult and realising that their different personalities are actually representations of different emotions you go through as a child.
Eeyore (Brad Garrett) suffers from depression and uses comedy to work through it. Piglet (Nick Mohammed) suffers from anxiety and is able to work through it with the support of his friends. Tigger (Jim Cummings) has a slight form of narcissism and gets pulled back by the rest when he becomes too self-absorbed.
Looking at it now, Winnie-the-Pooh really is a kid-friendly way to have kids learn and understand different emotional states. The movie also does a great job of being enjoyable for both adults and kids. Striking a perfect balance between it being family friendly but not annoying so.
Look, the storyline is pretty basic and it does end with a nice bow at the end. However, this is the kind of movie where I don’t mind it because of the fun ride. Pooh is also hilarious. I never noticed this before and director Marc Forster does a great job in using all of the members of the Hundred Acre Wood’s personalities to provide great comic relief while giving a life lesson.
Overall, 'Christopher Robin' is one fun escapist movie that will tug on your nostalgia heartstrings. This is a great movie to watch with the whole family while making you realise that letting go of adulting for a few moments isn’t the worst thing in the world.
