Matthew McConaughey is reportedly in talks to star either as gunslinger Rolan Deschain or the villainous Man in Black in the film adaptation of Stephen King's novel 'The Dark Tower'.

The 'Dallas Buyers Club' actor is reportedly being eyed to take on a lead role in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King's series of novels of the same name.

Although the deal is in its early stages, preliminary discussions are said to have taken place and both parties are interested, according to TheWrap.

McConaughey is initially thought to have been offered the role of gunslinger Rolan Deschain but is now said to be considering exploring his dark side by instead playing the villainous Man in Black.

Writer and filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel is already on board to direct from a script written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinker and primarily based on the first book in King's 'The Dark Tower' series, 'The Gunslinger'.

The novel is mixture of horror and fantasy and tells the story of a gunslinger who has dedicated his life to locating The Dark Tower - which is the nexus of the universe - before evil invades and ends all existence by destroying it.

In addition to the film, financiers Sony Pictures and MRC are also planning a companion TV series.

It's so far unclear as to whether the actors involved in the movie will also feature in this.

'The Dark Tower' is slated for release on January 13, 2017.
