Reading the Daily News, there is definitely a water crisis in most municipalities throughout KwaZulu-Natal, where there is a shutdown of water supply.
To me this is an absolute disappointment. The continuing saga of poor service delivery of water in most areas, which is affecting all residents, is undeniably alarming. This is forcing residents to take to the streets in desperation. It was even more disappointing that in spite of being invited by the residents, some councillors did not turn up to hear the pleas of residents. Before the elections all the politicians made their promises to deliver. It was Mark Twain who popularised the saying: “There are three kinds of lies; lies, damned lies and statistics.”
If one were to take the words of some leaders everyone is a winner. Most municipalities are facing this crisis as a result of a lack of technical skills and management incompetence.
We as residents have a right to clean water and municipalities are failing dismally in providing basic needs. Regrettably the current situation is becoming intolerable. Therefore we as a community must stand up and hold politicians accountable for this dire situation.
It appears politicians are blinded and remain deaf to the cries of the people. This is a serious crisis and something has to be done about the access of water with immediate effect. It is time for all politicians to work together to build a better life for all. We must not allow ourselves to be complacent about the needs of our people. Maybe a miracle will still occur with no disruption and the water crisis will be over throughout KZN, but I wouldn't hold my breath though.
