Durban — The University of South Africa (Unisa) Women’s Forum will hold the 2022 Feroza Adam Memorial Lecture and the Unisa Women of the Year Awards on Friday.

It is being done in partnership with the South African Women in Dialogue.

The lecture and awards coincide with Women's Month and the 66th anniversary of the agency and activism of the 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 to protest against the hated pass laws. The theme is “Realising Women’s Rights for an Equal Future” #Women Breaking the Glass Ceiling”.

Discussions are likely to revolve around providing South African women with the opportunity to explore and share solutions to the challenges faced by women and children.

Feroza Adam, born in August 1961, was a South African political activist and a renowned publicist for the African National Congress and other organisations. She was elected to Parliament in 1994, shortly before she died in a car accident in August of that year.

For twenty-two years (since 1999), Unisa has annually commemorated the life and work of Feroza Adam. This year will be the 23rd commemoration.

Professor Puleng LenkaBula, Unisa principal and vice-chancellor, said the women’s month dialogue seeks to address gender-based violence in the country, racism and gender equality, the fight against the exploitation of sex workers, conversations around radical economic transformation, issues of women and migration, women refugees and xenophobia, and other processes, which seek to reclaim the dignity of women in the home, at work, in communities, in society and in the economy.

LenkaBula said: “The Unisa Women’s Forum is a recognised structure which strives to promote the broader interests of women at Unisa; and in particular those related to appointments, conditions of service, equal opportunities, equal treatment and representation at levels in the institution.”

Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, the Minister of Small Business Development, South Africa’s Ambassador to Namibia, Thenjiwe Mtintso as well as LenkaBula are expected to be among the key speakers during the event.
