Durban — At least three videos are circulating on social media of the violent hijacking that took place in Newlands West, north of Durban, on Wednesday morning.

A bronze Toyota Corolla was taken from a couple in Newlands West by four armed suspects who had arrived in a silver Renault Sandero.

It is alleged that shots were fired.

The incident took about a minute.

In one of the videos, the Renault drives past a woman outside an open garage.

The woman is standing outside the garage while a man is backing the Toyota out into the driveway. At the same time, two suspects from the Renault alight and run into the garage. The driver of the Renault reverses towards the woman and a third suspect alights and heads for the woman.

The suspect accosts the woman and appears to be removing her necklace before heading for the garage, when one of the suspects drags out the man who had been getting the car out of the garage.

While another suspect drags the man, another suspect goes to the woman and appears to remove more jewellery.

The man tries to fight the suspect off the woman but he is hit by one of the suspects. Two suspects then return to the woman for more jewellery while the Renault backs up more, allowing a third suspect to drive the Toyota out of the garage.

The Renault flees first while what appears to be a neighbour steps onto the road only to be scared off by a gunshot.

In another video, at the corner of Cornfield Crescent and Earlsfield Drive, the Renault and Toyota are seen fleeing the scene.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that a 68-year-old complainant alleges that on August 10, 2022, at 8.20am he was attacked by three unknown men who pointed a firearm at him and his family.

“They took their jewellery and a vehicle before they fled.”

Ngcobo said that a case of carjacking was opened at Newlands East SAPS.
