Durban — The Mtunzini High Court convicted and sentenced three suspects to life imprisonment on Friday for murder, attempted carjacking and the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Phumulani Mjaza, 33, Musa Nelson Phahla, 37, and Sabelo Enoc Mdletshe, 38, were sentenced after the court heard how they killed Nduduzo Ntuli, 31.
Ntuli was parking his minibus outside his home in Maphumulo on June 30, 2020, when the suspects approached him.
The suspects wanted to take his taxi and he attempted to fight them off. In the process, Ntuli was shot and declared dead on the scene.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said after the gunshots Ntuli's father managed to restrain one of the suspects, while the other two fled.
Ngcobo said a case of murder was then reported and investigated by Maphumulo police.
“The detective who was allocated the docket worked around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. Two days later, the other two suspects were arrested at Hlahleni in Maphumulo,” said Ngcobo.
All suspects were charged with murder, attempted carjacking and the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Mjaza was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 10 years for attempted carjacking and a further 10 years for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Meanwhile, his co-accused Phahla and Mdletshe were each sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and a further 10 years for attempted carjacking.
