Durban — Two suspected hijackers and attempted murderers are expected in court soon after they were arrested in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said that shortly before 7am on Sunday, Midlands EMS paramedics were dispatched to Fort Nottingham Road for a single vehicle roll-over.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found that two patients had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Both patients were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a local facility in Pietermaritzburg, Robertson said.

“Whilst crews were treating the patients, they found that neither patient had any identification and kept changing names. Whilst en route to the hospital, a vehicle check was done, and crews were informed that the vehicle had been stolen in PMB,” Robertson said.

“Both our crews were updated, and they continued as normal on the way to the hospital.”

“Prestbury SAPS were activated to meet our crews at the medical facility after a case had been opened yesterday (Saturday) for hijacking, where one of the occupants had been shot and is recovering in hospital,” Robertson continued.

He said that when Midlands EMS reached the medical facility, both suspects were surprised to be met by police officers, who then placed them under arrest and escorted their crews into the hospital.

Roland thanked all those involved and said, “well done to our crews for keeping a cool head in this situation that could have quickly escalated out of control.”

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that it is alleged that two male victims were seated in the vehicle on Morcom Road in Prestbury when they were accosted by two armed suspects who demanded car keys.

Ngcobo said that the suspects then drove off in the complainant's vehicle.

“The matter was reported to Prestbury police, and charges of carjacking and attempted murder were opened for investigation.

“The vehicle was found overturned in the Nottingham Road area. Two suspects aged 22 and 27 were arrested and will appear in court soon,” Ngcobo said.
