Inclusivity reigned as hearing-impaired Mia le Roux is crowned Miss South Africa 2024

Durban — The hearing-impaired community, agencies, organisations, political parties and many more have echoed “inclusivity” since Mia le Roux was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 over the weekend.

Le Roux, 28, hails from Sasolburg in the Free State and was raised in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

During her Miss SA journey, she expressed the challenges that she had growing up, following being diagnosed with profound hearing loss as a one-year-old and how she relies on her cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.

She also expressed the time it had taken her to utter her first words.

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), under the authority of the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, expressed great joy in the crowning of Le Roux.

NYDA executive chairperson Asanda Luwaca said South Africa is a diverse society which ought to reflect all that live in it, the crowning of Mia as the first Miss SA living with a physical disability, therefore forms a testament to the agenda of the government, all stakeholders form a part of the transformation mission to drive inclusivity in our society.

She said for the greatest of times, beauty pageants remained untransformed with standards of beauty that marginalised various communities of people across age, marital status, parenting status and various physical disabilities.

“Mia is truly a formidable young woman, who is deserving of all recognition and honour. Her spirit of resilience is truly inspiring for all of us as young people, to continue championing the plight of inclusivity across all sectors. Mia remains a beacon of hope for the community of young people living with disability and the NYDA wishes to applaud her for her efforts,” Luwaca said.

The NYDA wished Le Roux well in her reign and looks forward to collaborating with her on initiatives that benefit young people, particularly youth with disabilities.

On Facebook, the National Institute for the Deaf ‒ Worcester, South Africa said: “Congratulations to our new Miss South Africa 2024, Mia le Roux ‒ South Africa’s first deaf Miss South Africa!”

Miss, Mr & Mrs Deaf South Africa congratulated Le Roux and said “Thank you for putting the deaf community on the map, you have all our support.”

Casual Day said Le Roux’s is a celebration of beauty, grace, and the power of unity.

“Her journey represents the essence of an inclusive and strong South Africa, where different experiences and stories come together to create something truly extraordinary,” Casual Day said.

“As Miss South Africa, Mia embodies the values of giving a voice to the marginalised, compassion, and resilience. Her dedication to representing our nation on both the national and international stage is an inspiration to us all. She reminds us that when we come together, we can overcome challenges and achieve greatness.”

The organisation said they look forward to supporting Le Roux in her reign as she continues to champion the causes close to her heart. Her leadership and commitment to making a positive impact will undoubtedly inspire many, and we are excited to see the incredible work she will accomplish in the year ahead.

Political parties also joined in congratulating Le Roux.

The DA said: “Breaking barriers and making history! Congratulations to Mia Le Roux, our newly crowned Miss SA 2024! As a hearing-impaired woman, Mia embodies strength and resilience, proving that no barrier is too great to overcome. She is a beacon of hope, inspiring a new generation to break boundaries and chase their dreams. We are proud South Africans, defined by our diversity and inclusivity!”

The ANC said: “Enormous congratulations to Mia Le Roux on being crowned Miss South Africa. Notably, she is the first deaf person to be crowned.

“Mia, as the role model that you are, you show the youth of our country that anything is possible. May your reign be a testament to the power of inclusivity, diversity, and innovative technology that empowers individuals to reach new heights. You are a beacon of hope and a shining example that anything is possible with hard work, passion, and the right support.

“Congratulations again, Mia!”

The EFF said: “Miss South Africa 2024 is Mia le Roux! Congratulations.”
