Durban cricketer Ntando Soni, 17, is set to showcase his skill set against the best youth cricketers during a national cricket camp later this week.

The camp takes place between August 9 and 11 at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium and invites top under-17 cricketers from across the country to showcase their skills and work with national-level coaching.

Following his selection, Ntando said he is grateful for the opportunity to showcase his talents and ability.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn from the best youth coaches in the country and to showcase my skills, so I feel good. I hope to just absorb as much information as I can as a cricketer and definitely improve and share my experience with others.”

Ntando is the Glenwood High School First XI cricket captain and is currently in matric. He operates as a right-arm fast bowler and a middle-order batter.

Since the age of 5, Ntando said he started watching and liked the adrenalin that cricket gave off. He added that at that time, he had a friend – Caleb – who liked cricket as well. Both of them played cricket with each other and through that, he discovered that he was quite decent at the sport.

Ntando said his favourite player currently is South African cricketer Tristan Stubbs, just because of the way he presents himself and how he goes about things on and off the field.

Ntando shared that he has represented both KZN and South Africa before. Among his achievements are:

  • KZN under-11 twice (2016–2017)
  • KZN under-12 (2018)
  • KZN under-13B (2019)
  • KZN under-16 (2022)
  • KZN under-19 (2023)

“In 2023, I represented the SA Schools team in Grade 11 and got Man of the Match in one of my matches,” Ntando said.

Outside cricket, he said that he enjoys swimming and playing hockey; and he praised himself by saying his hockey ability isn’t bad as he has also represented the Glenwood First XI hockey side for a few years.

“Always appreciate the opportunity you get and the gift you have,” Ntando concluded.
